Fee Waiver Status

Once you have applied for a fee waiver, you can check on the status of your application at any time. Below you will find explanations for each of the status types that may appear on your status screen.

Status Explanation
Approved by Law School Name. A law school to which you have applied has approved your request for a fee waiver. You can register for the Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS) and two LSATs within the two-year fee waiver period, and order a copy of The Official LSAT SuperPrep without incurring registration or purchasing fees. Note: A fee waiver does not cover late registration fees. In addition, some law schools offer an automatic waiver of their application fee when an applicant receives an LSAC fee waiver. If applicable, you will see a screen notification when completing electronic applications for those schools.
PLUS participant-fee waiver approved. You have a PLUS fee waiver.
LSAC conditionally approved. Final approval of your fee waiver is pending LSAC's receipt of your required documentation. Please submit all documents promptly. Your LSAC fee waiver application has been CONDITIONALLY APPROVED; final approval is contingent upon review of the tax forms you submit to LSAC. All documentation, including tax forms, must be received by LSAC within 45 days from the date of your conditional approval. If documentation is not received within the 45 days, your application for a fee waiver will be canceled. Note: You must print out, complete, and send in the online tax form cover sheet with your tax forms. Your application will not be reviewed unless the form is included. Your LSAC file has been placed on hold pending final approval of your fee waiver. A hold will not prevent you from taking the LSAT; however, you will NOT receive your LSAT scores and law school reports will NOT be sent to law schools to which you have applied. Upon final approval of your fee waiver, the hold will be removed from your LSAC file. While final approval of your fee waiver application is pending, you can register for the Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS) and two LSATs within the two-year fee waiver period, and order a copy of The Official LSAT SuperPrep. If the review of your tax forms determines that you are ineligible for a fee waiver, the hold will remain on your file, and you will be billed for the service(s) for which you registered, and for the SuperPrep, if ordered. Note: A fee waiver does not cover late registration fees.

In addition, some law schools offer an automatic waiver of their application fee when an applicant receives an LSAC fee waiver. If applicable, you will see a screen notification when completing electronic applications for those schools.

Your documentation must be received by LSAC within 45 days from the date you initiated your appeal request. If documentation is not received within the 45 days, your appeal will be canceled. Fee Waiver Appeal Process

If you have been denied a fee waiver, you may appeal the denial decision. Submit a written, signed explanation to LSAC adressing the reason you were denied as well as the circumstances that you feel make you eligible for a fee waiver. Note: Online applicants MUST print out, complete, and send to LSAC the online Fee Waiver Appeal Cover Sheet with the explanation. An appeal will not be reviewed unless the form is included.

Include the appropriate tax forms and any additional documentation that would lend support to your fee waiver appeal. Examples of supplementary documentation include, but are not limited to, proof of job loss, an unemployment insurance eligibility form, documentation of a disability, and/or proof of extraordinary medical expenses. All documentation must be received by LSAC within 45 days from the date you submitted your appeal request.

During the appeal process (see below), you can register for the Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS) and two LSATs, and order a copy of The Official LSAT SuperPrep; however, a hold will be placed on your LSAC file until your tax forms and supporting documentation have been received and reviewed by LSAC. A hold will not prevent you from taking the LSAT; however, you will NOT receive your LSAT scores and law school reports will NOT be sent to law schools to which you have applied. If your fee waiver is ultimately approved, your status will change to "LSAC-approved," at which time the hold on your file will be removed. If your appeal is denied, you will be billed for the service(s) for which you have registered; the hold on your file will be removed upon receipt of payment.

You will be notified by e-mail of final approval or denial of your appeal. You can also check your fee waiver status in your LSAC Online Services account. Appeal decisions are final.

Fee Waivers and Electronic Application Fees

If you have been fully approved for an LSAC fee waiver, you are still responsible for each individual law school's application fee unless otherwise stated. Some law schools will automatically waive their application fee for the applicants who have received an LSAC fee waiver. If applicable, you will see a screen notification when completing electronic applications for those schools.

If you have been conditionally approved for an LSAC fee waiver, you have three options:

  1. delay sending the application to LSAC until receipt of final fee waiver approval or an appeal decision; or
  2. send the application electronically to LSAC and pay the required application fee. (Note: LSAC cannot issue admission application fee refunds); or
  3. print out the application and mail it directly to the law school with a letter explaining that you have applied for an LSAC fee waiver. If the LSAC fee waiver is approved, you must forward a copy of the approval letter to the law school. If denied, you must forward the admission application fee directly to the school.

Financial Obligation

If you are unable to obtain transcripts from a school due to a financial obligation, you must indicate this when registering for the Credential Assembly Service (LSDAS). If the school is the only undergraduate institution you attended, or if you have attended multiple undergraduate institutions and have outstanding financial obligations with all of them, a Credential Assembly Service report cannot be produced for you.

It also allows LSAC to match such items as transcripts, letters of recommendation, score reports, and law school requests to your file.

If you do not provide LSAC with your Social Security/Social Insurance number at the time of registration, but do provide it on your LSAT answer sheet, LSAC will automatically update your file with the number indicated on your answer sheet.
